Atal Setu Construction Cost & Toll Charges on Mumbai Trans Harbour Link

Prime Minister Modi is set to inaugurate the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL), a 21.8-kilometer-long bridge connecting Sewri in South Mumbai to Chirle near Navi Mumbai. The construction of Atal Setu, the key bridge in this project, has incurred a total expenditure exceeding Rs 17,840 crore.

Currently in Maharashtra, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is poised to unveil a significant project in the state. The inauguration will center around the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL), a 21.8-kilometer-long bridge connecting Sewri in South Mumbai to Chirle near Navi Mumbai. Named the ‘Atal Bihari Vajpayee Sewari – Nhava Sheva Atal Setu,’ this 6-lane sea link spans 16.50 kilometers over the sea and 5.50 kilometers on land.

Atal Setu Cost Rs 17,840 Crore

Atal Setu holds the distinction of being not just the longest sea bridge but also the lengthiest bridge ever built in India. The commencement of its construction dates back to December 2016 when Prime Minister Modi laid the foundation, as per a report by Economic Times.

A statement from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) revealed that the creation of ‘Atal Setu’ incurred a total expenditure exceeding Rs 17,840 crore. Maharashtra Chief Minister Ekanath Shinde highlighted the project’s significance, emphasizing its potential to reduce the travel time between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai to a mere 20 minutes, a journey that typically takes around 2 hours.

Faster Connectivity Via Mumbai Trans Harbour Link

The Mumbai Trans Harbour Link is anticipated to enhance swift connectivity to both Mumbai International Airport and Navi Mumbai International Airport. Additionally, it is expected to significantly decrease travel time between Mumbai and destinations such as Pune, Goa, and South India.

Chief Minister Eknath Shinde expressed that the new roadway would be a considerable relief for Mumbai residents, alleviating the burden of traffic congestion. Furthermore, the improved link between Mumbai Port and Jawaharlal Nehru Port is poised to streamline connectivity. The reduction in both distance and travel time not only enhances convenience but also translates to substantial fuel savings, estimated to be around Rs 500 per journey, according to a report by the Economic Times.

Atal Setu Toll Charges

According to an official statement quoted by PTI, a one-way toll for a passenger car on the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link is set at Rs 250. Different charges will apply for return journeys, daily commuters, and frequent travelers, as specified by an official. It’s noteworthy that only half the conventional toll collection amount is being implemented, as decided by the Eknath Shinde cabinet. The rates are subject to review and potential revision after the first year of operational commencement, according to the cabinet’s decision.

No Entry For These Vehicles

The Eastern Freeway is off-limits for certain vehicle types, including motorcycles, mopeds, three-wheelers, autos, tractors, and animal-drawn vehicles. Additionally, multi-axle heavy vehicles, trucks, and buses bound for Mumbai are restricted from entering the Eastern Freeway. Instead, these vehicles are directed to utilize the Mumbai Port-Sewri Exit (Exit 1C) and proceed along the MBPT Road near ‘Gadi Adda’ for their onward journey, as outlined by the provided information.

Future Rate Revisions

As per the cabinet’s decision, the toll rates for the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link will be subject to a thorough review and possible adjustment one year after the commencement of operations, allowing for flexibility in response to evolving circumstances.

Set for inauguration by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 12, the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link, officially designated as the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Sewri-Nhava Sheva Atal Setu, covers a distance of 21.8 kilometers and carries a total cost of Rs 21,200 crore, with Rs 15,000 crore secured through loans.
