Gyanvapi Mosque Case: ASI Survey Unveils Hindu Temple Exited Before..
- Advocate Vishnu Shankar Jain revealed that the ASI findings suggest a significant Hindu Temple predated the current structure at the Gyanvapi mosque site.
The Gyanvapi mosque case saw new developments as eleven individuals requested copies of the ASI report this week. Lawyers representing the Hindu side express confidence, anticipating victory once the ASI clarifies the Shivling-fountain debate. The Varanasi court instructed the ASI to release the report to both parties.
Advocate Vishnu Shankar Jain stated, “The ASI confirms the existence of a large Hindu Temple before the current structure.”
A disputed structure found during a court-ordered survey next to the Kashi Vishwanath temple fuels the conflict. The Hindu side asserts it’s a ‘Shivling,’ while the Muslim side claims it’s a fountain. The ‘Wazu’ area was sealed in 2022 following a Supreme Court order after the alleged Shivling was discovered.
In July 2023, the Archaeological Survey of India conducted a scientific survey of the Gyanvapi premises as per a district court directive. The ASI aimed to ascertain if the mosque was built over a pre-existing Hindu temple structure.
Earlier this year, the Supreme Court granted a request from Hindu women petitioners to clean the entire ‘wazukhana’ area of the Gyanvapi mosque.
Advocate Vishnu Shankar Jain expressed confidence in an interview, stating, “The ‘wazu’ area is currently sealed and cleaned, under the custody of the Varanasi District Magistrate. We anticipate victory upon receiving the ASI survey report. We’re hopeful for the day when Gyanvapi will be free from this encroachment.”

On a recent Thursday, eleven individuals, representing both Hindu and Muslim sides, applied for copies of the ASI survey report on the Gyanvapi mosque complex adjacent to the Kashi Vishwanath temple.
The report distribution is expected either on Thursday or Monday after scrutiny of the applications, according to counsel Madan Mohan Yadav.
Following a district court order in July last year, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) conducted a scientific survey of the Gyanvapi premises to ascertain if the mosque was built over a pre-existing Hindu temple structure.
Advocate Vishnu Shankar Jain reiterated their confidence in the case, stating that victory seems imminent upon the ASI survey report’s release.
Meanwhile, the Varanasi district court mandated the ASI report be made public and provided to both sides. Advocate Hari Shankar Jain, representing the Hindu side, claimed evidence suggesting the temple’s demolition for the mosque’s construction.

The ‘wazukhana’ area, sealed in 2022 by Supreme Court order after the purported discovery of a ‘Shivling,’ remains a point of contention. Discovered during a court-ordered survey, it’s claimed as a ‘Shivling’ by Hindus and a fountain by Muslims.
The Gyanvapi mosque-Kashi Vishwanath temple dispute hinges on this structure, discovered during the survey.
On January 16, the Supreme Court allowed Hindu women petitioners to clean the ‘wazukhana’ area, ensuring hygiene. The area’s sealing followed the alleged ‘Shivling’ discovery in 2022.
District Judge A K Vishvesh ruled that the ASI survey report must be provided to both Hindu and Muslim sides. The court allowed various parties, including the Kashi Vishwanath temple trust, to obtain the report.
Ordered after Hindu petitioners claimed the mosque was built over a pre-existing temple, the ASI submitted its survey report in a sealed cover to the district court on December 18.
