Bengaluru Suicide Case: Atul Subhash’s Wife, Her Mother, and Her Brother Arrested

In a tragic case from Bengaluru, 34-year-old Atul Subhash, who died by suicide after alleging harassment by his wife and her family, has led to multiple arrests. Bengaluru Police arrested Atul’s wife, Nikita Singhania, from Gurugram, Haryana, and her mother, Nisha, and brother, Anurag, from Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh, on Saturday.

Details of the Case

A senior police officer revealed that the three individuals have been charged with abetment of suicide under Section 108 of the Indian Penal Code, along with Section 3(5), which pertains to committing a criminal act with common intent. Reports suggest that the accused had allegedly demanded ₹3 crore to withdraw legal cases against Atul and ₹30 lakh for granting him visitation rights to see his son.

Investigation and Arrests

The Bengaluru Police sought assistance from their counterparts in Uttar Pradesh to trace the accused, as Nisha and Anurag had reportedly fled their Jaunpur residence on Wednesday. A notice was pasted on the wall of their locked house before their arrest. All three suspects were presented in court and sent to judicial custody.

Background of the Incident

Atul, who worked as a deputy general manager at an automobile company in Bengaluru, was found dead in his Munnekollal apartment on Monday. His death followed a complaint filed by his brother, Bikas Kumar, against Atul’s wife, Nikita, her mother Nisha, brother Anurag, and uncle Sushil Singhania.

The accused had applied for anticipatory bail in the Allahabad High Court, but the arrests occurred before the plea could be heard.

Allegations and Evidence

Before his death, Atul shared his struggles in a 24-page note and an 81-minute video. In the video, he wore a board around his neck that read, “Justice is Due.” He accused his in-laws of harassment and claimed that a family court judge in Uttar Pradesh had shown favoritism towards them, allegedly involving corruption.

Who Was Atul Subhash?

Originally from Uttar Pradesh, Atul married Nikita, a software professional, in 2019. The couple later separated, and Atul faced nine legal cases, including accusations of murder, dowry harassment, and unnatural sexual acts. His parents were also implicated in some of these cases.

The case has shed light on the alleged misuse of legal provisions and the personal toll of prolonged legal battles, sparking discussions about mental health and justice in family disputes.

Custody Battle for Subhash’s Son

Amid the ongoing investigation and arrests in the tragic case of Atul Subhash, his family is now grappling with another challenge — the custody of his young son, whose whereabouts remain unknown. Atul’s father, Pawan Kumar, has made an emotional appeal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, and other leaders for assistance in locating the child.

“We have no idea where Nikita has kept our grandson. Is he alive, or has something happened to him? We are completely in the dark. For a grandfather, his grandson is even more precious than his own son,” Pawan Kumar said in a statement. He also revealed that a fresh maintenance case has been filed against him in the child’s name, further adding to the family’s concerns, according to ANI reports.

Family’s Concerns

Atul’s brother, Bikas Kumar Modi, echoed similar worries, stating, “Our biggest fear is not knowing where my nephew is. We are hopeful that the remaining accused will also be apprehended soon, and we can get some answers.”

Broader Implications

This case highlights the deep emotional and legal complexities surrounding custody battles and marital disputes. Atul’s tragic death has not only devastated his family but also raised critical questions about the legal framework governing alimony, child custody, and the potential misuse of legal provisions in matrimonial conflicts.

As the case continues, it serves as a stark reminder of the need for legal reforms and systemic changes to address the emotional and financial toll such disputes take on families.
