The Permanent Account Number (PAN) card is an essential identification document for Indian taxpayers. With the introduction of PAN Card 2.0, the government has modernized its features to enhance usability, security, and accessibility. One of the standout features of PAN Card 2.0 is the addition of a QR code, making it more versatile and future-ready. This article dives deep into what PAN Card 2.0 is, its features, benefits, and why it’s a game-changer for citizens.

What is PAN Card 2.0?

PAN Card 2.0 is the upgraded version of the traditional PAN card, introduced to align with India’s growing digital ecosystem. This new version includes a scannable QR code, offering enhanced verification capabilities. The card retains its fundamental purpose as a unique identifier for financial transactions, but it now comes with additional features that improve its utility and security.

Features of PAN Card 2.0

Here are some key features of PAN Card 2.0 that make it a significant upgrade:

  1. QR Code Integration
    • The QR code stores encrypted information such as the PAN holder’s details, including their name, father’s name, date of birth, and PAN number.
    • Scanning the QR code facilitates quick and tamper-proof verification of identity.
  2. Enhanced Security
    • The new PAN card uses advanced security printing technology, reducing the risk of counterfeiting.
    • The QR code ensures the authenticity of the card, preventing fraudulent usage.
  3. Durable Design
    • The card material and design are more robust, ensuring longevity.
    • Key details are printed in a way that resists wear and tear.
  4. Government Integration
    • PAN Card 2.0 is seamlessly integrated with government databases, enabling faster verification during financial transactions and compliance checks.
  5. User-Friendly Information Layout
    • The new layout is designed to be clear and concise, making it easier for users and officials to read the details.

Benefits of PAN Card 2.0

The updated PAN card offers numerous advantages for individuals and businesses:

1. Easy Verification

The scannable QR code simplifies the verification process for financial institutions, government agencies, and employers. Instead of manually entering data, scanning the QR code ensures accurate and quick access to essential details.

2. Improved Security

PAN Card 2.0 significantly reduces the chances of identity theft or forgery. The QR code and advanced printing techniques provide an additional layer of security.

3. Faster Processing

Whether it’s opening a bank account, filing taxes, or applying for a loan, PAN Card 2.0 streamlines the process by allowing instant verification.

4. Supports Digital Transformation

As India embraces a digital-first approach, the QR code feature supports the broader goal of digitization. It eliminates reliance on manual methods, making financial processes more efficient.

5. Enhanced Trustworthiness

Since the QR code carries official encrypted information, institutions can trust the authenticity of the card without further cross-verification.

How to Apply for PAN Card 2.0

You can apply for PAN Card 2.0 online or offline through authorized channels.

Online Application Process

  1. Visit the official PAN application website:
  2. Fill out the application form with accurate details.

  3. Submit the form at your nearest NSDL or UTIITSL center.

Arrest Warrant for Gautam Adani and His Nephew Sagar Adani

Sources have reported that an arrest warrant has been issued for Gautam Adani and his nephew Sagar Adani. On Wednesday, November 20, a grand jury in New York indicted the prominent business tycoon and seven others. The charges involve bribery amounting to approximately $265 million, which is roughly 2,029 crore Indian rupees. This arrest warrant has been issued in connection with the bribery case.

Lisa H. Miller, Deputy Assistant Attorney General for the Justice Department’s Criminal Division, has accused Gautam Adani of attempting to bribe Indian government officials to secure solar energy supply contracts. The arrest warrant was issued as part of the investigation into this alleged bribery.

What Is an Indictment in the U.S. Legal System?

An indictment is a formal written accusation that charges an individual with a crime. In the case of Adani and his associates, the indictment has serious legal implications. If the grand jury finds enough evidence, the accused could face trial and legal consequences.

What happens next for Adani and his alleged conspirators? They will likely go through further legal proceedings, which could lead to a trial where the charges will be examined more closely.

What is an indictment?

Black’s Law Dictionary defines an indictment as an official, written accusation made against someone charged with a crime. This process follows a specific set of steps.

Once the police investigate a suspected crime, they pass the collected evidence to a public prosecutor. The prosecutor, who represents either the state or federal government, reviews the evidence based on whether the crime is a state or federal matter. If the prosecutor believes the crime is serious enough, such as a felony, they can begin the process of selecting a grand jury.

What is a grand jury and who are its members?

A grand jury is a group of individuals chosen randomly to represent a diverse mix of citizens from the area under the court’s jurisdiction. In New York State, this jury can have up to 23 members, with at least 16 required to review the evidence.

This process is essential because, as stated in New York’s Grand Juror’s Handbook, no one can face trial for a felony in the state without first being formally charged through a grand jury indictment.

What does a grand jury do?

A grand jury’s role is different from that of a trial jury, often seen in TV shows or movies. While a trial jury decides whether someone is guilty “beyond a reasonable doubt,” a grand jury’s task is simpler. It evaluates whether there is enough evidence to move forward with a trial, not to determine guilt or innocence.

If the grand jury finds the evidence sufficient, they issue an indictment, listing the formal charges against the accused. This leads to a trial where the case will be fully heard and decided.

Grand jury proceedings are confidential, unlike the public trials. Also, a grand jury doesn’t require all jurors to agree, unlike a trial jury. In New York, at least 12 jurors out of the 16 to 23 must agree to issue the indictment.

In Adani’s case, after the indictment, the trial will likely move to the “arraignment” phase. During this stage, the judge will present the charges and determine whether the accused individuals can be granted bail. The accused will then decide whether to plead guilty or not guilty. If they plead not guilty, the case will proceed to a jury trial.

Kolkata Doctor’s Rape and Murder Case: After the rape and murder in Kolkata, and an attack on the protest, hospital services will remain closed on Saturday except for emergency care.

The strike declared by the doctors is a protest against the rape and murder of the female doctor, and her fellow team of doctors has announced a nationwide strike. After the incident, doctors initially began a strike on Monday, which affected only some hospitals, government hospitals, and elective surgeries. But now, the Indian Medical Association has declared a nationwide strike for 24 hours, which will cause the biggest disruption in medical services. All services in government and private hospitals will be shut down on Saturday, except for emergency care.

Dr. Johnrose Jayalal, the president of the Indian Medical Association, said that this is the largest reaction and public outrage seen so far. The public is extremely angry, which ultimately led to the declaration of the strike. More than 50% of doctors in India are women, and 90% of the nursing staff are also women. It is the government’s responsibility to ensure their safety by declaring hospitals as protected zones, similar to how airports and courts are secured.

Jayalal also mentioned that concerns about the safety of female doctors are increasing day by day, as in most cases, when a patient dies, their relatives blame the doctor. In many instances, doctors have even been assaulted after a patient’s death.

GVGnn6FXQAAwW8y

The incident last week, where a 31-year-old doctor was raped and murdered, occurred in a seminar room at RG Kar Hospital in Kolkata, West Bengal. She had gone there to rest during her night shift due to stress. An informal hospital staff member has been arrested and a criminal case has been filed regarding the incident.

Although the incident took place in Kolkata, today the entire country is mourning and standing together in protest. The team of doctors has decided to halt services nationwide for 24 hours, demanding the government take action for the safety of doctors.

Amid discussions about this incident, another case has been filed on August 8th in Uttarakhand, where a nurse was raped and murdered while on her way home.

The principal of RG Kar Medical College, Dr. Sandip Ghosh, instead of expressing sorrow, has raised questions about why the victim doctor went to rest alone in the seminar room at night, especially when she was supposed to go to another hospital after her resignation.

Politicians started pointing fingers at each other. When West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee faced criticism from opposing parties for not ensuring women’s safety, she responded by asking, “What about the sexual violence happening in your state?”

India’s 1st Underwater Metro in Kolkata: The underwater Kolkata Metro line’s Howrah Maidan-Esplanade section travels under the Hooghly River and features India’s deepest Metro station – Howrah.

On Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated India’s first underwater Metro line in Kolkata and embarked on a journey from Esplanade to Howrah Maidan accompanied by school students. Additionally, Modi virtually inaugurated various other Metro services across the nation.

The Howrah Maidan-Esplanade section of the underwater Metro line marks the inception of India’s first transportation tunnel beneath a river. This section traverses under the Hooghly River, with Kolkata situated on its east bank and Howrah on its west bank. Notably, the Howrah station stands as India’s deepest Metro station, descending 30 meters below ground.

INDIA’S 1st UNDER WATER METRO - KOLKATA-1

As the nation gears up for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, the Kolkata Metro network is set to expand by 11.45 kilometers. This expansion includes 5.4 kilometers on the Orange Line, 4.8 kilometers on the Green Line, and 1.25 kilometers on the Purple Line.

Since its establishment in 1984 until 2014, Kolkata’s Metro network spanned only 27.99 kilometers, according to officials. However, a significant expansion ensued after 2014, resulting in a growth of 25.34 kilometers. The expansion began with the inauguration of the East-West Metro’s first phase, covering a 5.3-kilometer stretch from Salt Lake Sector V to Salt Lake Stadium in 2020.

Over time, the Kolkata Metro continued to expand its reach. Sections from Salt Lake Stadium to Phoolbagan (1.67 km) and Phoolbagan to Sealdah (2.33 km) were opened for commercial service. In 2021, the Noapara-Dakshineswar stretch (4.14 km) commenced operations, followed by the inauguration of the Joka-Taratala stretch (6.5 km) on the Purple Line in 2022.

Metro authorities highlight the remarkable expansion witnessed during 2022-2023, recording a record-breaking addition of 14.23 kilometers to the network in a single year. An official remarked that this expansion represented a substantial 36 percent increase in the existing network since the inception of the Kolkata Metro.

From 1972 to 2014, a total expenditure of Rs 5,981 crore was allocated for all Kolkata Metro projects. However, between 2014 and October 2023, the expenditure surged to Rs 19,043 crore, reflecting the financial commitment to complete ongoing Metro projects in the city.

Presently, the Kolkata Metro network spans 47.93 kilometers, comprising 32.13 kilometers of the North-South Corridor, 9.3 kilometers of the East-West Corridor, and 6.5 kilometers of the Joka-Esplanade Corridor. An additional extension of 13.27 kilometers is in the pipeline.

In a recent development, several extensions were inaugurated. These include a 4.80-kilometer stretch of the East-West Metro from Howrah Maidan to Esplanade, alongside another extension of 1.25 kilometers from Taratala to Majerhat. Furthermore, a 5.4-kilometer stretch of the New Metro Corridor from Kavi Subhas to Hemanta Mukhopadhyay has been opened to the public.

The underwater metro service is a crucial part of Kolkata Metro’s East-West corridor, linking Howrah Maidan to Esplanade. It stretches 16.6 kilometers beneath the Hooghly River, connecting Howrah and Salt Lake. The route encompasses six stations, including three underground ones. It’s anticipated to cross a 520-meter section under the Hooghly River in merely 45 seconds.

Today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated India’s longest cable-stayed bridge in Gujarat’s Dwarka. The ‘Sudarshan Setu’, connecting Okha and Beyt Dwarka island, was built at a cost of ₹ 979 crore. In October 2017, PM Modi laid the foundation stone for the 2.3 km-long bridge, emphasizing its significance as a link between old and new Dwarka.

According to an official release, the four-lane bridge is 27.20 meters wide with 2.50 meters wide footpaths on each side. Sudarshan Setu boasts a unique design featuring footpaths adorned with verses from the Bhagavad Gita and images of Lord Krishna on both sides.

The bridge, previously referred to as the ‘Signature Bridge’, has been given a new name, ‘Sudarshan Setu’ or Sudarshan Bridge. Beyt Dwarka is an island close to Okha port, approximately 30 km away from Dwarka town, home to the famous Dwarkadhish temple of Lord Krishna.

Farmers Protests at the Shambhu Border: Protesting farmers are using kites to fight back against police drones dropping tear gas. The Haryana Police deployed drones to stop farmers from entering Delhi, resulting in clashes with tear gas and water cannons. Punjab authorities have objected to drones in their area. Despite calls for dialogue from Union Agriculture Minister Arjun Munda, farmers persist with their ‘Delhi Chalo’ protest, demanding MSP laws and other concessions.

Farmers protesting at the Shambhu border have come up with a unique strategy to deal with police drones dropping tear gas shells on them: they’re flying kites. The Haryana Police have been using drones to release tear gas shells on the farmers as they try to enter the state and move towards Delhi for their ‘Delhi Chalo’ protest.

Objections from Punjab Authorities

The farmers have been flying kites to limit the area where tear gas can be fired by the drones. This idea came about after clashes with the Haryana Police, who used tear gas and water cannons on Tuesday to stop the farmers from breaking through the barricades blocking their march to Delhi.

After a confrontation lasting several hours, farmer leaders decided to call off the protest for the day, only to resume their march from the Shambhu border the next day.

Punjab authorities have raised objections to Haryana’s use of drones at the Shambhu border. Patiala Deputy Commissioner Showkat Ahmed Parray has written to the Ambala Deputy Commissioner, asking them not to send drones into Punjab territory at the Shambhu border near Ambala. Farmers claim that drones dropped tear gas canisters on them even when they were well inside Punjab territory.

Continued Protests and Demands

Thousands of farmers, primarily from Punjab and Haryana, are participating in the ‘Delhi Chalo’ agitation, urging the central government to meet their demands, which include a law on Minimum Support Price (MSP) for crops and loan waivers.

Farmers Protests at Shambhu Border - Police has sealed the border to restrict them travelling to Delhi-1

As the ‘Delhi Chalo’ protest entered its second day, farmers started flying kites to counter government drones dropping tear gas canisters on them.

Union Agriculture Minister Arjun Munda appealed to the farmers, emphasizing the need for constructive dialogue and urging them to avoid actions that disrupt the lives of ordinary people.

Despite the ongoing standoff between the Centre and farmer leaders, the farmers continue to gather at the Shambhu border, preparing to break through multi-layered barricades. Young farmers are mobilizing their tractors, ready to dismantle the cemented blocks hindering their progress.

Criticism and Demands

Sarwan Singh Pandher, a prominent farmer leader, criticized the government’s approach, accusing it of prioritizing corporate interests over the farmers’ demands.

Foremost among these demands is the enactment of a law guaranteeing MSP for crops. Other key points of contention include the repeal of the Electricity Act 2020, compensation for farmers killed in Lakhimpur Kheri, and the withdrawal of cases against those involved in the farmers’ movement.

The situation at the Shambhu border remains tense as security personnel fired tear gas shells at the protesters, prompting the farmers to take precautions. They equipped themselves with water bottles, wet clothes, and even protective gear to minimize the impact of tear gas. Despite the challenges, the farmers remain determined to continue their protest until their demands are met.
