Mumbai Boat Accident: A tragic accident took place near Mumbai on December 18, 2024, when a ferry carrying 110 people, including children and crew members, was hit by a Navy speedboat. The ferry, traveling from the Gateway of India to Elephanta Island, overturned after the crash. Sadly, 13 people lost their lives, including 10 civilians and one Navy officer.

The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) carried out a major rescue operation, saving 101 passengers. However, four of the rescued people are still in critical condition and are being treated.

How Did the Accident Happen?

The accident happened around 6:30 PM when the ferry, named Neelkamal, was close to Elephanta Island. A Navy speedboat, which was on a trial run with a newly installed engine, lost control and crashed into the ferry.

Officials said the engine of the speedboat got stuck at full speed, making it impossible for the operator to steer or stop the boat. Despite attempts to avoid the crash, the speedboat rammed into the ferry, causing it to overturn.

Live Video of Boat Accident

A video recorded by a bystander shows the Navy speedboat trying to change direction to avoid the ferry but losing control and hitting it instead. The video has been shared widely on social media.

The Indian Navy confirmed that 13 people, including a Navy personnel and two members from the boat’s engine manufacturer, lost their lives. Meanwhile, 99 passengers were rescued and transported to nearby jetties and hospitals. Rescue efforts are ongoing to account for any missing individuals.

Massive Rescue Operation Launched

Following the collision, the Indian Navy, in coordination with the Coast Guard and Marine Police, launched an extensive search and rescue mission. According to a Navy statement, the operation involved:

  • 11 naval craft
  • 4 naval helicopters
  • 1 Coast Guard boat
  • 3 Marine Police boats

The survivors were quickly transferred to hospitals for treatment, while search efforts continued in the accident area near Karanja, Mumbai.

How Did the Accident Happen?

The Navy stated that their speedboat was undergoing engine trials when the collision occurred. A technical malfunction caused the boat to lose control and crash into the ferry. The ferry capsized, leading to the tragic loss of lives and the need for urgent rescue operations.

Government Response

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed deep condolences for the victims and their families. He announced an ex-gratia of ₹5 lakh for the families of the deceased.

In a statement to the media, Fadnavis provided details about the ongoing efforts, saying:

  • 11 rescue crafts and 6 helicopters were deployed to carry out the search operation.
  • The government is working closely with the Navy, Coast Guard, Port authorities, and Police teams to ensure all possible assistance is provided.

In a social media post, the Chief Minister said, “Orders have been given to deploy all necessary machinery for the rescue operation. Most passengers have been rescued, but efforts are underway to locate any missing individuals.”

Updates from the Assembly

While addressing the state assembly, CM Fadnavis shared early reports suggesting that 30-35 passengers were on board the ferry. Of these, 20 had been rescued, while search efforts were focused on the remaining individuals. A detailed statement is expected as the situation develops.

The accident highlights the need for strict safety measures during engine trials and passenger transportation to prevent such tragic incidents in the future.

The Mumbai Coastal Road, under construction since 2018, is finally open now. People coming from the Western Suburbs can now use the southbound lane from Worli to get to Marine Drive in only 8-10 minutes. What’s interesting about this project is that it has India’s first undersea tunnel, and the best part is, you don’t have to pay any tolls to use it!

Mumbai’s iconic Queens Necklace coastline, with its dazzling lights and Art Deco landmarks, has undergone a significant change. The Coastal Road Project, built on reclaimed land in the Arabian Sea, faced criticism for its impact on the environment and the city’s skyline. On Monday, part of the road was officially opened, marking a permanent shift in Mumbai’s landscape.

Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, along with Deputy Chief Ministers Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar, inaugurated the southbound section of the road, connecting Marine Drive to Worli. Despite previous postponements, the government proceeded with the inauguration, organizing a vintage car rally to celebrate the occasion. The road will operate from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm on weekdays and remain closed on weekends for ongoing construction and beautification efforts. Notably, Chief Minister Shinde declared the entire road toll-free.

Spanning 10.58 kilometers and costing Rs 13,983 crore, the project includes India’s first undersea tunnel, stretching 2.72 kilometers. The northbound carriageway, featuring the tunnel, promenade, and underground parking, is expected to be completed by May. Phase 2 of the project will extend the coastal road from Bandra to Versova, covering 29.20 kilometers.

The completion of the coastal road and the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL), inaugurated earlier, are significant achievements for the BJP-Sena-NCP government, especially as national elections approach.

While the coastal road promises to ease commuting, critics argue it prioritizes cars over public transport and threatens the coastal ecosystem and livelihoods of fishing communities. The project’s high cost and limited accessibility for heavy vehicles, two-wheelers, and pedestrians have raised concerns among citizens.

The Mumbai Mobility Forum highlights the need for affordable and efficient public transportation in Mumbai’s densely populated landscape. Despite discussions with the BMC, concerns about pedestrian access and commuter-friendly infrastructure remain unaddressed.

The coastal road aims to streamline travel from Worli to Marine Drive, but concerns persist about traffic congestion and its impact on the Marine Drive promenade, home to numerous Art Deco buildings.

Environmental concerns surrounding the project include the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s failure to seek proper approval under Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) rules. Reclaiming 111 hectares of sea land has disrupted marine ecosystems, affecting fishing communities like the Kolis.

The Kolis, Mumbai’s earliest inhabitants, depend on coastal fishing for their livelihoods. However, infrastructure projects like the coastal road and the Bandra-Worli Sea Link have severely affected their traditional way of life. Despite government assurances and compensation, the Kolis fear for the future of their community and livelihoods.

Inaugurating the project, the government assured attention to the concerns of fishing communities, but for the Kolis, compensation cannot compensate for the loss of their way of life and the uncertain future facing generations to come.

Mira-Bhayandar: Reports indicate that around 20 fire engines were quickly dispatched to extinguish the fire, according to officials. There are reports of injuries among individuals affected by the blaze.

Early Wednesday morning saw a devastating fire erupt in a densely populated slum near the Golden Nest circle in Bhayandar (east), leaving hundreds homeless. The blaze, which ignited around 5:30 am in Azad Nagar, a slum also housing numerous scrap warehouses with hazardous materials, caused panic and chaos.

Sanjay Katkar, head of the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC), promptly arrived at the scene, coordinating with officials from nearby cities to deploy additional fire trucks. A total of 14 fire trucks from Mumbai, Thane, and Vasai-Virar, in addition to MBMC’s ten, battled the flames, supported by 12 water tankers.

The call for help came at 5:55 am. Tragically, Deepak Chourasia, known as Pappu, aged 42, succumbed to severe burns, while five others, including two children and three firefighters – Shivaji Sawant, Santosh Patil, and Hitesh – sustained injuries during rescue efforts. Thankfully, hundreds were safely evacuated,” stated Prakash Borade, the chief fire officer.”

Massive loss of property reported

A significant amount of property damage occurred as approximately 50 huts, along with numerous scrap warehouses and other businesses, were destroyed in the fire. Over 134 firefighters worked for over four hours to extinguish the flames. While the exact cause remains under investigation, initial reports suggest that a short circuit in a scrap warehouse sparked the fire, which then spread throughout the area. Residents also reported hearing loud explosions, possibly from gas cylinder blasts, contributing to the intensity of the blaze.

A firefighter stated, ‘We suspect that four gas cylinders exploded, but we managed to safely remove eight more cylinders and seven air compressors used for industrial purposes.’ Meanwhile, lawmaker Pratap Sarnaik and volunteers from Bhayandar, led by Jameel Shaikh and Azim Tamboli, visited the site. They arranged food and other essentials for those displaced by the fire, emphasizing the urgent need for better safety regulations, particularly in densely populated slum areas in the twin cities.

Five fire trucks quickly responded to the scene and began firefighting efforts. Local authorities also arrived promptly upon hearing about the tragedy. While no casualties have been reported, the damage to property posed a significant challenge for the slum residents.

Images of the fire depicted large flames engulfing the slum, with thick black smoke filling the sky. Onlookers, likely residents, gathered to witness the flames, with some attempting to help extinguish the blaze.

According to MBVV Police, they had given a warning to Waris Pathan, telling him not to visit the area during the celebration of Shiv Jayanti. They were concerned that his presence could worsen the situation in the region, which had experienced communal violence a month earlier.

On Tuesday, the police in Mira Bhayandar Vasai Virar (MBVV) stopped Waris Pathan, a former lawmaker and leader of AIMIM, at Dahisar Toll Naka. He was heading there to deliver a letter to the MBVV Commissioner, requesting action against hate speeches.

The MBVV Police had previously warned Waris Pathan not to visit the area due to the celebration of Shiv Jayanti. They were concerned that his presence could worsen the situation, especially after the recent communal violence in the area.

“On Sunday, we gave Waris Pathan a warning not to come to Mira Road. Despite this, he attempted to enter the area. As a result, we detained him briefly and later released him when he agreed to return to Mumbai,” an officer stated.

Pathan stated his intention to visit the city to meet with the Commissioner to address individuals delivering divisive speeches that incite communal tensions.

“I planned to meet with the police commissioner to submit a memorandum against individuals who spread hate and stir up communal unrest. But I ended up being arrested,” Waris Pathan tweeted following his detention.”

Tensions rose in Mira Road before the consecration ceremony of the Ram temple in Ayodhya on January 22.

The dispute started when several individuals from the Hindu community, riding in 3-4 vehicles, began chanting slogans in the Naya Nagar area of Mira Road near Mumbai, leading to communal clashes.

He talked to reporters at Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar in central Maharashtra.

“The government demolished shops and houses of people in Mira Road, which was unfair. I strongly criticize this action as it harmed people and ruined their businesses,” said the Lok Sabha MP from Hyderabad.

“At that time, nobody bothered to visit those affected people. Now, self-interested individuals who claim to be secular will visit Mira Road for votes before the elections,” added the AIMIM leader.
