Affordable Meals at Airports: Modi Government Launches UDAAN Yatri Cafe

In a significant move to make airport meals affordable, the Modi government has introduced the UDAAN Yatri Cafe, a budget-friendly food outlet aimed at providing travelers with pocket-friendly and hygienic meals. Similar to the affordable food options available at railway stations, airports will now have government-authorized UDAAN Yatri Cafes to serve quality meals at reasonable rates.

UDAAN YATRI CAFE

New Year Gift for Flyers

Prime Minister Narendra Modi initiated this project to address the long-standing issue of overpriced food at airports, where meal prices often range five to ten times higher than outside market rates. With this initiative, middle-class travelers can now enjoy hygienic meals without straining their budgets.

UDAAN Yatri Cafe: A Step Towards Affordable Travel

The Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) has launched the UDAAN Yatri Cafe to tackle the exorbitant prices of food and beverages at airports. This initiative not only aims to make travel more enjoyable but also supports economic growth by promoting better facilities for flyers.

First UDAAN Yatri Cafe Launched in Kolkata

The first UDAAN Yatri Cafe was inaugurated at Kolkata’s Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport as a pilot project. Depending on its success, the government plans to expand these cafes to other airports across the country.

Key Role of Raghav Chaddha

AAP MP Raghav Chaddha played a pivotal role in highlighting the issue of overpriced airport meals in Parliament. Responding to his concerns, the government took swift action by launching the first UDAAN Yatri Cafe. If the pilot project proves successful, more such cafés will soon be available nationwide.

The Mumbai Coastal Road, under construction since 2018, is finally open now. People coming from the Western Suburbs can now use the southbound lane from Worli to get to Marine Drive in only 8-10 minutes. What’s interesting about this project is that it has India’s first undersea tunnel, and the best part is, you don’t have to pay any tolls to use it!

Mumbai’s iconic Queens Necklace coastline, with its dazzling lights and Art Deco landmarks, has undergone a significant change. The Coastal Road Project, built on reclaimed land in the Arabian Sea, faced criticism for its impact on the environment and the city’s skyline. On Monday, part of the road was officially opened, marking a permanent shift in Mumbai’s landscape.

Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, along with Deputy Chief Ministers Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar, inaugurated the southbound section of the road, connecting Marine Drive to Worli. Despite previous postponements, the government proceeded with the inauguration, organizing a vintage car rally to celebrate the occasion. The road will operate from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm on weekdays and remain closed on weekends for ongoing construction and beautification efforts. Notably, Chief Minister Shinde declared the entire road toll-free.

Spanning 10.58 kilometers and costing Rs 13,983 crore, the project includes India’s first undersea tunnel, stretching 2.72 kilometers. The northbound carriageway, featuring the tunnel, promenade, and underground parking, is expected to be completed by May. Phase 2 of the project will extend the coastal road from Bandra to Versova, covering 29.20 kilometers.

The completion of the coastal road and the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL), inaugurated earlier, are significant achievements for the BJP-Sena-NCP government, especially as national elections approach.

While the coastal road promises to ease commuting, critics argue it prioritizes cars over public transport and threatens the coastal ecosystem and livelihoods of fishing communities. The project’s high cost and limited accessibility for heavy vehicles, two-wheelers, and pedestrians have raised concerns among citizens.

The Mumbai Mobility Forum highlights the need for affordable and efficient public transportation in Mumbai’s densely populated landscape. Despite discussions with the BMC, concerns about pedestrian access and commuter-friendly infrastructure remain unaddressed.

The coastal road aims to streamline travel from Worli to Marine Drive, but concerns persist about traffic congestion and its impact on the Marine Drive promenade, home to numerous Art Deco buildings.

Environmental concerns surrounding the project include the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s failure to seek proper approval under Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) rules. Reclaiming 111 hectares of sea land has disrupted marine ecosystems, affecting fishing communities like the Kolis.

The Kolis, Mumbai’s earliest inhabitants, depend on coastal fishing for their livelihoods. However, infrastructure projects like the coastal road and the Bandra-Worli Sea Link have severely affected their traditional way of life. Despite government assurances and compensation, the Kolis fear for the future of their community and livelihoods.

Inaugurating the project, the government assured attention to the concerns of fishing communities, but for the Kolis, compensation cannot compensate for the loss of their way of life and the uncertain future facing generations to come.

On Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated India’s first underwater Metro line in Kolkata and embarked on a journey from Esplanade to Howrah Maidan accompanied by school students. Additionally, Modi virtually inaugurated various other Metro services across the nation.

The Howrah Maidan-Esplanade section of the underwater Metro line marks the inception of India’s first transportation tunnel beneath a river. This section traverses under the Hooghly River, with Kolkata situated on its east bank and Howrah on its west bank. Notably, the Howrah station stands as India’s deepest Metro station, descending 30 meters below ground.

INDIA’S 1st UNDER WATER METRO - KOLKATA-1

As the nation gears up for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, the Kolkata Metro network is set to expand by 11.45 kilometers. This expansion includes 5.4 kilometers on the Orange Line, 4.8 kilometers on the Green Line, and 1.25 kilometers on the Purple Line.

Since its establishment in 1984 until 2014, Kolkata’s Metro network spanned only 27.99 kilometers, according to officials. However, a significant expansion ensued after 2014, resulting in a growth of 25.34 kilometers. The expansion began with the inauguration of the East-West Metro’s first phase, covering a 5.3-kilometer stretch from Salt Lake Sector V to Salt Lake Stadium in 2020.

Over time, the Kolkata Metro continued to expand its reach. Sections from Salt Lake Stadium to Phoolbagan (1.67 km) and Phoolbagan to Sealdah (2.33 km) were opened for commercial service. In 2021, the Noapara-Dakshineswar stretch (4.14 km) commenced operations, followed by the inauguration of the Joka-Taratala stretch (6.5 km) on the Purple Line in 2022.

Metro authorities highlight the remarkable expansion witnessed during 2022-2023, recording a record-breaking addition of 14.23 kilometers to the network in a single year. An official remarked that this expansion represented a substantial 36 percent increase in the existing network since the inception of the Kolkata Metro.

From 1972 to 2014, a total expenditure of Rs 5,981 crore was allocated for all Kolkata Metro projects. However, between 2014 and October 2023, the expenditure surged to Rs 19,043 crore, reflecting the financial commitment to complete ongoing Metro projects in the city.

Presently, the Kolkata Metro network spans 47.93 kilometers, comprising 32.13 kilometers of the North-South Corridor, 9.3 kilometers of the East-West Corridor, and 6.5 kilometers of the Joka-Esplanade Corridor. An additional extension of 13.27 kilometers is in the pipeline.

In a recent development, several extensions were inaugurated. These include a 4.80-kilometer stretch of the East-West Metro from Howrah Maidan to Esplanade, alongside another extension of 1.25 kilometers from Taratala to Majerhat. Furthermore, a 5.4-kilometer stretch of the New Metro Corridor from Kavi Subhas to Hemanta Mukhopadhyay has been opened to the public.

PM Modi Goes Underwater for ‘Dwarka Darshan’: Have you ever imagined exploring the ancient submerged city of Dwarka in Gujarat, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi found solace in prayer, experiencing a deeply spiritual and breathtaking moment? If so, you’ve come to the right place! We’re here to guide you on a journey to the underwater city of Lord Krishna.

Recently, PM Modi took a plunge into the Arabian Sea at the reputed site of Dwarka’s submerged city. Venturing into the deep waters, he visited the site believed to be the original dwelling of the Hindu deity Krishna, and an ancient city renowned for its magnificence and wealth.

PM MODI ON HIS UNDERWATER PUJA AT SUBMERGED CITY OF DWARKA

Prime Minister Modi expressed reverence for Dwarka, a site cherished for its profound cultural and spiritual heritage. He mentioned presenting peacock feathers as homage to “Dwarakadheesh,” another title for Krishna, the king of Dwarka. Describing his underwater experience as a journey through time, he reflected on Dwarka’s illustrious history and its deep connection with one of Hinduism’s most revered deities.

“Today, I submerged myself underwater and prayed at the site where the ancient city of Dwarka lies submerged. I believe that whatever occurs here is with the permission of ‘Dwarakadheesh’. Having visited numerous pilgrimage sites across the country, I find the same divine essence here in Dwarka. I paid homage to this city, which holds a deep cultural and spiritual legacy, and offered peacock feathers underwater,” the PM expressed during a gathering after initiating multiple development projects valued at over Rs 4,150 crore.

He also highlighted the Sudarshan Setu, a remarkable engineering feat, connecting Okha and Beyt Dwarka. He encouraged students of structural engineering to study this marvel closely.

“The Sudarshan Setu, a 2.32-km bridge with a 900-meter central double span cable-stayed portion and a 2.45-km approach road, was constructed at a cost of Rs 979 crore. This four-lane bridge, 27.20 meters wide, features 2.50-meter wide footpaths on each side,” stated an official release from the Devbhumi Dwarka administration.

THE IMPORTANCE OF THE ANCIENT CITY OF DWARKA

“The tales encircling the ancient city of Dwarka, the sacred realm of Lord Krishna and one of India’s seven revered pilgrimage spots, hold both religious and archaeological importance. The lost city, known as the ‘ancient kingdom of Krishna’ in the epic Mahabharata, is thought to have submerged beneath the Arabian Sea following Lord Krishna’s passing. It is believed to have extended over approximately 84 km as a fortified city at the convergence of the Gomti River and the Arabian Sea.”

WHERE IS DWARKA LOCATED?

Dwarka is situated in the state of Gujarat, along the western coastline of the Okhamandal Peninsula, positioned on the right bank of the Gomti River where it meets the Gulf of Kutch and faces the Arabian Sea.

HOW TO REACH DWARKA?

Dwarka enjoys excellent connectivity through air, rail, and road networks to major cities. The nearest airport to the city is Jamnagar Airport, while Dwarka Railway Station links to various significant cities such as Jamnagar, Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Surat, Mumbai, Goa, and many others.

SCUBA DIVING IN DWARKA

Scuba diving in Dwarka takes place along the coast, near an island named Bet Dwarka, offering glimpses of the underwater remnants of ancient Dwarka unearthed by archaeologists. Alongside the submerged remains, vibrant coral reefs adorn the seabed, while the clear waters provide opportunities to observe marine life such as dolphins, turtles, octopuses, and starfish.

Shivrajpur Beach stands out as one of the top and most accessible spots for this activity, reachable via public transportation. Jamnagar Airport serves as the nearest air link, while Dwarka Railway Station provides railway access. Additionally, the beach enjoys good road connectivity to major cities within the state.

On January 4th, Prime Minister Modi posted a series of images showcasing his Lakshadweep islands visit, emphasizing the promotion of tourism in the Union Territory.

The fallout from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s promotion of Lakshadweep as a tourist destination escalated when the Maldives government suspended three ministers for ‘derogatory comments.’ Following this development, the High Commissioner to Maldives held discussions with Ministry of External Affairs officials on Monday.

The controversy began with PM Modi’s posts, leading to a social media dispute involving Maldivian users and ministers, transforming it into a significant diplomatic issue.

Explore the unfolding events since PM Modi’s Lakshadweep post sparked an unforeseen reaction:

PM Modi promotes Lakshadweep tourism

On January 4th, Prime Minister Modi posted images from his Lakshadweep visit, promoting tourism in the Union Territory. Although Modi didn’t reference Maldives or other tourist-frequented islands, it elicited offensive, racist, xenophobic, and derogatory remarks from Maldivian social media users.

Maldivian ministers put up social media posts with derogatory remarks on PM Modi

Tensions heightened as diplomats and high-ranking officials joined the fray, echoing and disseminating these comments. Three deputy ministers—Malsha Shareef, Mariyam Shiuna, and Abdulla Mahzoom Majid—from the Maldives’ Youth Ministry criticized Modi’s Lakshadweep post, suggesting it aimed to position the Union Territory as a substitute tourist spot to the Maldives.

The Maldives Government disassociates itself, suspending 3 ministers

The Maldives government officially separated itself from the comments made by ministers and MPs involved in the Lakshadweep vs. Maldives social media dispute following Prime Minister Modi’s Lakshadweep photos. In a statement, the government clarified that derogatory remarks on social media do not reflect the official stance, emphasizing them as personal opinions. Subsequently, the government swiftly suspended the three ministers—Mariyam Shiuna, Malsha Shareef, and Mahzoom Majid.

Union ministers of India back Modi’s Lakshadweep pitch amid row

On Sunday, Minister of State for External Affairs Meenakshi Lekhi and Union Minister G Kishan Reddy voiced their support for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s promotion of Lakshadweep tourism. This came in response to derogatory remarks by three now-suspended Maldivian ministers following PM Modi’s posts.

Emphasizing the importance of Indians exploring domestic tourist spots, Lekhi remarked, “We have to take pride in our history and also take steps to make India ‘atmanirbhar’.

The Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Development for the North Eastern region, G Kishan Reddy, suggested, ‘No need to visit New Zealand or Switzerland. Everything is in Lakshadweep.’ On the other hand, Congress leader Salman Khurshid advocated for dialogue, declining further discussion on the matter.

Maldives envoy meets MEA officials

On Monday, the High Commissioner of Maldives to India, Ibrahim Shaheeb, engaged with officials from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). As reported by the news agency PTI, the MEA officials expressed their concerns regarding the remarks.

India-based online travel company MakeMyTrip reported a remarkable 3,400% surge in on-platform searches for Lakshadweep following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the islands. Additionally, EaseMyTrip announced the suspension of all flight bookings to the island nation on its website as a gesture of solidarity with India.

In a series of posts on X, EaseMyTrip CEO Nishant Pitti emphasized the comparable beauty of Lakshadweep to Maldives and Seychelles. He pledged to introduce special offers to promote this pristine destination that PM @narendramodi recently visited. Pitti encouraged travelers to explore the captivating beauty of Ayodhya and the pristine allure of Lakshadweep, urging them to “Say no to Maldives bookings and explore the wonders of Ayodhya and Lakshadweep.”

Matter of Fact

As per official statistics from the Maldivian government, Indian tourists consistently rank among the top ten nationalities visiting the island annually. In the year 2023 alone, Indians constituted the largest group of tourists, with over 200,000 travelers exploring the Maldives.

Recent news reports have brought to light a distressing incident involving the Titan submarine, which was being operated by OceanGate Expeditions. The submarine exploded in the Atlantic Ocean, following its departure on a mission to explore the remains of the Titanic near the Newfoundland coast on June 18. Tragically, the submersible lost contact just two hours after setting off. The ill-fated expedition included several notable individuals, such as a renowned Titanic expert, an explorer holding a world record, two members from one of Pakistan’s wealthiest families, and the CEO of the company. The US Coast Guard, along with deep-water experts from Canada, the UK, and France, initiated a search operation for the Titan submarine on Sunday, June 18, leading to a desperate multinational rescue effort. Sadly, the US Coast Guard confirmed yesterday that there were no survivors following the devastating implosion that occurred at great depths in the North Atlantic.

How much did Titan search cost?

Experts estimate that the extensive search operation for the missing Titan submersible will incur costs amounting to millions of dollars. The search effort involved various entities, including the US Coast Guard, the Canadian Coast Guard, the US Navy, as well as government and private organizations. The search area covered a vast expanse, stretching over thousands of miles, which is twice the size of Connecticut. Moreover, the search took place in extremely deep waters, reaching depths of around two and a half miles (4 kilometers).

Naval historian Norman Polmar emphasized that this search is unprecedented and unmatched in previous oceanic searches. The involvement of numerous nations and even for-profit businesses further distinguishes this operation from any other conducted in history.

According to the Government Accountability Office, operating the aircraft involved in the search incurred expenses in the range of tens of thousands of dollars per hour. Various aircraft types, including P-3 Orion turboprops, P-8 Poseidon jet subhunters, and C-130 Hercules, were utilized during the search efforts.

While certain organizations might seek repayment, it is important to note that federal law typically prevents the U.S. Coast Guard from collecting reimbursement for search and rescue operations. Attorney Stephen Koerting, who is representing the case, estimates that his fees alone will amount to millions of dollars.

Understanding Deep-Sea Implosions:

Deep-sea environments are known for their extreme conditions, characterized by immense water pressure at great depths. Submarines and other deep-sea vehicles are designed to withstand these pressures through robust structural integrity and careful engineering. However, the forces exerted at significant depths can still pose formidable challenges.

  1. Water Pressure:

One of the primary factors that may have led to the implosion of the Titanic submarine is the overwhelming water pressure at the depths it was operating. As the submarine descended further into the ocean, the pressure on its hull increased significantly. If the submarine’s construction or materials were compromised or if there were flaws in the design, the intense pressure could have caused the structure to give way, resulting in an implosion.

  1. Structural Weaknesses or Failures:

Another possibility is that the submarine experienced structural weaknesses or failures. Over time, continuous exposure to harsh underwater conditions, including saltwater corrosion and constant pressure changes, can weaken the integrity of the vessel. If there were pre-existing flaws or damage that went undetected, it could have contributed to the implosion.

  1. External Forces:

The occurrence of external forces impacting the submarine cannot be entirely ruled out. Unforeseen circumstances such as colliding with underwater objects, encountering powerful underwater currents, or suffering mechanical malfunctions could have put immense stress on the submarine’s structure. In extreme cases, these forces could overwhelm the vessel’s design limitations, leading to catastrophic failure.

Investigation and Lessons Learned:

Determining the precise cause of the Titanic submarine implosion requires a thorough investigation and analysis of available data, including the wreckage and any recorded information from the vessel’s systems. Experts in naval architecture, engineering, and underwater exploration will meticulously examine all possible factors and scenarios that might have led to the implosion.

The tragic incident serves as a somber reminder of the inherent risks involved in deep-sea exploration. It highlights the need for robust safety protocols, meticulous inspections, and ongoing maintenance of underwater vehicles to ensure their structural integrity and the safety of those aboard.

India will have toll plates on all vehicles very soon. Although FASTags has helped to reduce traffic at toll plazas, there are still some delays at toll plazas during peak hours in many cities and areas. The government is working on a project that will help to reduce or eliminate traffic, particularly on highways. The government is planning to replace toll plazas with an automatic number plate recognition system, said Union Minister Nitin Gadkari on Tuesday.

This is the most advanced system to date because vehicle owners will not need to stop at toll plazas and toll plaza fees will be deducted directly from their bank accounts.

At present, the technology of an automatic number plate recognition system is under test and trial, and it is said that once the technology is ready for implementation, this will replace toll plazas.

According to the road transport and highways minister, after the introduction of FASTags, the toll income of the state-owned National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has increased by ₹15,000 crore per year.Furthermore, he stated that after the implementation of this technology of automatic number plate recognition, there will be no toll plazas.

Previously, in the years 2018–2019, the average waiting time for every vehicle at a toll plaza was up to 8 minutes, which has been reduced to 47 seconds after the introduction of FASTags in 2020 and later. The reduced waiting time at toll plazas is truly appreciable after the introduction of FASTags. But still, we can see some traffic at toll plazas in highly populated cities during peak hours.

How will this New Technology (Automatic Number Plate Recognition System) work?

This new technology will directly link the number plate to the satellite. And with the help of a GPS that will be installed in a car, the toll amount will be deducted from the owner’s account. Which means no more waiting in lines at toll plazas; the amount will get directly deducted from the owner’s account with the help of GPS-based automated number plate readers.

Will you have to replace your current number plate with the new one?

Answer is Yes. As the Government of India is continuously trying to complete the tests and trials and get this technology ready for installation, the manufacturers will have to install this advanced number plate in all new vehicles. The old number plates will have to be replaced with the new toll plate, which will have a GPS system and software attached that will be used to deduct the toll amount directly from the owner’s account.
