ISRO AND MAPMYINDIA PLANNING TO DEVELOP AN ALTERNATIVE TO GOOGLE MAPS, ON WHICH NETIZENS RESPONDED WITH HILARIOUS MEMES.

The announcement left people online in a whirlwind as the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) and MapmyIndia joined hands to come up with an indigenous alternative to Google Maps. And it soon began to rain memes on social media sites as a natural progression.

Calling it a “pathbreaking milestone” towards the target of Atmanirbhar Bharat, company CEO Rohan Verma said the consumer maps, apps and services of MapmyIndia would “integrate and be much better” with the huge satellite imagery catalog of ISRO and earth observation data. “He took the venture to LinkedIn to announce, saying, “MapmyIndia, being a responsible local Indian company, ensures that its maps represent the country’s true sovereignty, depicting the boundaries of India as per the Indian government, and hosting its maps in India.

The CEO highlighted that, compared to international map apps and solutions, the solution would be more detailed and robust, as well as privacy-centered, hyper-local for people.

Soon, #GoogleMaps began to dominate online trends and some used this opportunity to make fun of the foreign mapping services as many celebrated the news.

While people seem to be very excited about trying the new product, neither ISRO nor MapmyIndia offered a timetable for the services to be rolled out.
