Following Congress Treasurer Ajay Maken’s announcement of the party’s bank account freeze, Vivek Tankha, a lawyer and Rajya Sabha MP, confirmed that there were no limitations on accessing the accounts, as per the tax tribunal’s ruling. Tankha represented the Congress party before the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal bench in Delhi. Tankha expressed concerns that the freeze might hinder the party’s participation in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
However, the tribunal clarified that while there would be a lien on the account, the party could continue operating without restrictions.
Tankha mentioned that the hearing on the merits is scheduled for Wednesday. Additionally, Maken, speaking at a press conference earlier today, revealed that the bank account of the Youth Congress party had also been frozen. Maken expressed concerns about the financial impact, affecting various activities, including the Nyay Yatra and other political engagements.
He highlighted issues with bank transactions, leading to the discovery of the freeze on Youth Congress accounts. Maken underscored that both Congress and Youth Congress accounts were seized due to an Income Tax demand of Rs 210 crore. He emphasized the critical timing, just weeks before elections, equating the freeze to a threat to democracy.

At Delhi’s Jantar Mantar, Youth Congress workers staged protests against the reported freezing of the Congress party’s bank accounts. This incident occurs months before the Lok Sabha polls and follows the Supreme Court’s decision to invalidate the Centre’s electoral bonds scheme, labeling it “unconstitutional.”
The court mandated the disclosure of bond details, including donors, amounts, and recipients, by March 13th.
