FASTag Mandatory From Today: Pay Double The Toll Fee If You Do Not Have It.

A declaration was issued by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways stating that FASTag would be mandatory on all toll plaza lanes from Monday (January 15). Vehicles without FASTags or without valid FASTagentering feature would be penalized at twice the rate of the toll given to the vehicle in question. “The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways has decided that all lanes in the fee places on National Highways shall be declared as “FASTag lane of the fee spot” w.e.f midnight of 15/16 February 2021.

Press Information Bureau (PIB) published the statement from the Ministry that said “Ministry of Road Transport & Highways has decided that all lanes in the fee places on National Highways shall be declared as “FASTag lane of the fee plaza” w.e.f midnight of 15/16 February 2021. Accordingly, in accordance with the NH Fee Rules 2008, any vehicle not equipped with a FASTag or a vehicle not equipped with a legal, working FASTag shall pay a fee equal to two times the fee applicable to that category.

The statement released by the ministry indicated that the ministry explained that this was done to further facilitate the payment of fees through digital mode, minimize waiting time and fuel consumption, and ensure a smooth passage through the fee plazas. With effect from 1 January 2021, the Ministry ordered the installation of FASTag in the M&N categories of motor vehicles.

Class “M” means a motor vehicle with a minimum of four wheels used to transport passengers. Category “N” refers to a motor vehicle with at least four wheels used to transport goods which, in addition to goods, may also carry people. A notification making a FASTag mandatory for all four-wheel vehicles from January 1, 2021 had earlier been released by the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. For M and N class four-wheelers sold before December 1, 2017, FASTag has become mandatory.

The Central Motor Vehicles Regulations, 1989, were revised for this. On November 6, the ministry released a notification about this. The FASTag has been made compulsory for all registrations of new four-wheeled vehicles as of December 1, 2017, as per the Central Motor Vehicles Regulations, 1989, and is supplied by the vehicle manufacturer or its dealers.
