“The hole that this friendship has now left with me, I will spend the rest of my life trying to fill. Grief is the price we pay for love. Goodbye, my dear lighthouse.”

In an interview with BBC, Shantanu shared that he and Ratan Tata spent quality time together, doing things like getting haircuts and watching movies. Shantanu also helped Tata set up his Instagram account, where Tata shared old memories and photos of himself and his dogs.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Shantanu published a book titled Came Upon a Lighthouse, which was based on the life lessons he learned from his mentor, Ratan Tata. In the book, Shantanu described Tata as both a demanding boss and a caring friend.

In addition to his ventures in various industries, Ratan Tata was also a passionate advocate for stray animals. Over time, he began adopting stray dogs. In 2023, Tata founded India’s first specialized small animal hospital, a nonprofit dedicated to providing advanced healthcare for animals, especially dogs.
